Alpine nestles snugly within the Cuyamaca Mountains of San Diego County, California. Alpine has a fairly stable, but growing, population of roughly 15 thousand residents. The town is embraced by the scenic Cleveland National Forest, with its boundaries touching the reservations of two Kumeyaay Nation communities: Viejas and Sycuan. It also shares borders with the serene rural areas encircling the city of El Cajon.

Exploring Alpine CA

Alpine CA sits in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains. Its landscape is rugged and varied, ranging from densely forested to semi-arid hilly terrain, culminating in the peaks of Viejas and El Cajon Mountains soaring over 4000 feet in elevation.

To the west, it borders the suburbanized Lakeside, while to the east, it serves as a gateway to San Diego County’s wilderness areas, including mountains, forests, and deserts.

A Brief History Of Alpine CA

Before becoming a modern settlement, the region was inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians, whose lineage traces back as far as 12,000 years.

The name “Alpine” was proposed by a resident during the 1880s, inspired by the landscape’s resemblance to the Swiss countryside.

Over the past few decades, the commercial district along Alpine Boulevard has experienced suburban growth, surrounded by vast expanses of sparsely populated rural lands that date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Horse ranches, small farms, and open chaparral hillsides, along with riparian canyons, still dot the area.

In 2003, the Alpine region suffered extensive damage from the Cedar Fire.
