A Brief History Of Clairemont Mesa CA

Before Europeans migrated to the area, it was inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. The Spanish arrived in 1542 and established Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá nearby in 1769. Clairemont’s early settlement saw Judge Hyde cultivating land in Tecolote Canyon as early as 1872. Farming and ranching activities persisted until World War II.

In 1950, Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener unveiled what would become San Diego’s largest post-war subdivision. Initially named “The Village Within a City,” residents began moving into this new Clairemont development in May 1951. The community, named after Tavares’s wife, Claire, introduced a novel approach to neighborhood design, departing from the conventional grid system. Instead, it featured winding streets and picturesque view lots that capitalized on the surrounding canyons and bluffs overlooking Mission Bay. The inaugural homes, constructed by Burgener and Tavares Construction Company, boasted highly personalized floor plans.
