San Diego, famously dubbed “America’s Finest City,” is celebrated for its stunning beaches, rich cultural scene, and eclectic neighborhoods. Among these gems is Carmel Valley, a delightful enclave epitomizing the quintessential Southern California lifestyle. Nestled in the northwest corner of San Diego County, Carmel Valley effortlessly blends suburban serenity with urban amenities, rendering it a coveted residential destination.
Carmel Valley derives its name from the Sisters of Mercy, who established a dairy farm and monastery in the lower McGonigle Canyon in 1905. Originally named Mount Carmel by the Sisters, after a Biblical site near Jerusalem, the area became known as Carmel Valley when Robert Stevens acquired the farm in the 1940s and renamed it Mount Carmel Ranch. The community officially became part of the City of San Diego on February 1, 1975, with residential construction starting in 1983. Initially known as North City West, the area was eventually renamed Carmel Valley by residents in 1991.
