Coronado, aptly named “Crowned” in Spanish, is a charming resort city nestled in San Diego County, California, USA. Situated across the San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado boasts a rich history, with roots dating back to the 1880s and official incorporation in 1890. Despite experiencing a slight decrease in population, with 20 thousand residents in 2020 compared to nearly 25 thousand in 2010, Coronado remains a vibrant community.
Coronado, once home to the Kumeyaay, saw the establishment of fishing villages by these indigenous peoples on North Island and the Coronado Cays. However, with the arrival of American settlers, the Kumeyaay were displaced from Coronado by 1902, marking the end of their presence.
Incorporated as a town on December 11, 1890, Coronado’s early development was fueled by visionaries like Elisha Spurr Babcock, Hampton L. Story, and Jacob Gruendike. Their Coronado Beach Company aimed to create a resort community, culminating in the construction of the iconic Hotel del Coronado in 1888. This marked the city as a premier resort destination, supported by amenities like a schoolhouse and various clubs.
Further development followed with the establishment of Tent City in 1900, adjacent to the Hotel del Coronado, courtesy of John D. Spreckels. Additionally, streetcars ran along Orange Avenue in the 1910s, becoming a defining feature of Coronado until their retirement in 1939.
Parking is complimentary on nearby streets. Remember to keep your pup securely leashed as you cross the road, then follow the pathway along the sand to reach the shoreline.
